Go to any grocery store or department store looking for food storage containers and you will find that there are a wide range of products to choose from. Almost too many, and it can be rather difficult to figure out which products are best for your storage purposes. Most people have had the experience of being disappointed with their food storage containers for one reason or another. Perhaps it was because it leaked all over a car seat when being transported, or perhaps it was because it discolored within a very short period of time.
There are a number of food storage containers that have been tested and shown to work well above average. These products are relatively inexpensive, as well. Below are four highly rated storage containers for various types of foods.
Pyrex Cookware
1. Rubbermaid is a very well-known company with a long list of rubber and plastic products under their belts. They have many different types of food storage containers, one of which is listed as a "best of" on many websites. Rubbermaid Lock-Its have been tested and proven to be among the most durable and airtight plastic containers on the market. They come quite a few sizes so you can store very small portions, mid-sized portions, and larger portions. Gaskets on the lids lock onto the bases around the sides of the lid. They are wonderful at keeping air, which means that your left over spaghetti will not dry out or pick up strange new tastes from other foods that you have stored in your fridge. In addition to this, when tested they were shown to bend, dent, and break far less than other plastic food storage containers.
2. Another name you no doubt recognize from the food storage container section of the grocery store is Ziploc. The Ziploc Vacuum Starter Kit is perfect for storing meat in the freezer. It is inexpensive and, according to its users, it is rather fun to work with. The kit comes with three bags and a hand-held pump. The bags come in quart or gallon sizes. One significant find in the tests was that meat actually stayed red for longer periods of time compared to when it was stored with other products.
3. If you want a more permanent solution to food storage, then you can skip the all plastic containers and check out Snapware Glasslock containers. These glass containers are microwave safe--including the plastic lids. They do not discolor even when tested with a food infamous for staining dishware--tomato sauce. That is, the glass containers did not stain, but the plastic lids did show a little discoloring only when microwaved with tomato sauce. The lids on these puppies are also highly efficient, creating an air tight seal around on the container. The only thing you have to look out for is dish washing. When the lids were put in the dishwasher they became more difficult to snap on to the glass containers.
4. Last on the list is the OXO Good Grips Pop. These storage containers are the perfect solution to storing any of your dry foods. They have push button tops for easy access. The lids create an airtight seal on the containers. Their rounded tops also make it easy to pour certain foods straight out of the container. In addition to this, you can see right through them so you'll know when you are running low on your dry food items.
